Defense of freedom of information and expression against corporate and government censorship

Freedom of expression and information are constantly under threat. In countless ways.

In this section you will find everything we are doing to defend this fundamental right for any democracy worthy of the name.

  • We have devoted significant effort to showing how so-called “hate speech,” fake news and disinformation are being used as excuses to restrict freedom of information.
  • We provide concrete solutions to the fight against disinformation in our book, with several editions including versions for children: «#FakeYou, Fake News and Disinformation – Governments, political parties, mass media, corporations, great fortunes: monopolies of information manipulation and cuts to freedom of expression».
  • Outdated and short-sighted governments are pressuring the major online platforms that host global conversation to apply these tools as solutions to other problems they are not addressing, such as online harassment, incitement to hatred or a completely outdated copyright law. This approach inevitably leads to the systematic removal of online content, undermining our freedoms of information and expression, and it does not solve these problems. Policies that rely on poorly trained algorithms and arbitrary terms of service threaten to quickly become tools of censorship 2.0.
  • The right to freely use and disseminate information must be the rule, and partisan interests or commercial secrets and interests the exception. We must prevent new trade secret or anti-disinformation laws from providing tools to hide abuses or information of public interest and to bypass transparency policies.
  • At Xnet we firmly believe that freedom of expression is not a right of large media corporations but a right of citizens.
  • Defense of freedom of information and expression against corporate and government censorship. Encryption is more necessary than ever as a tool to protect our privacy and freedom of expression against the self-censorship that results from being subject to surveillance. We must demand laws that guarantee strong encryption.
