Joint Civil Society Statement Urges IMCO Committee to Uphold Fundamental Rights in the DSA
The Centre for Democracy & Technology (CDT) Europe, together with key civil society partners, produced a joint statement urging Members of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) in the European Parliament to uphold fundamental rights and democratic principles in the final DSA regulation.
This statement, signed by ten leading civil society organisations, was sent to the IMCO Committee in advance of the Committee’s deadline for tabling amendments to its draft report on the DSA on 1st July, 2021.
In particular, the signatories urge the Members of the IMCO Committee to:
- Uphold the prohibition on general monitoring in practice;
- Protect online expression of users;
- Combat discrimination against at-risk and marginalised communities online;
- Phase out advertising based on pervasive tracking;
- Focus on human rights due diligence obligations for companies’ products and services; and
- Consider the global impact on civic space.
